Catechesis at Immanuel

Catechesis is the process of making disciples. Its simplest meaning is to educate, but catechesis involves much more than classroom learning.

Catechesis can be likened to training in martial arts. A disciple is trained in body by good habits, such as prayer and attending the Divine Service. A disciple is trained in mind by attending Bible classes and other, education-focused events. A disciple is trained in righteousness by forming the habit of good works in love toward the brotherhood. All of this is included in the word "catechesis".

Bible Classes

Bible classes are classes that focus on learning the doctrine, stories, and history given in the Sacred Scriptures. We have adult and youth Bible classes (often called "Sunday School") follow the Divine Service on Sundays.

Catechism Class

Traditionally, Catechism Class (or Confirmation Class) focuses on learning the Small Catechism. This is more than memorization or learning the material in the Small Catechism (the education part of catechesis). Catechism Class teaches us how to live the life of faith through the chief doctrines of the Scriptures. Catechism Class focuses on the life of the Christian lived in faith. It is geared toward our children as children learn habits of mind and body much easier than adults.

Adult Catechism Class (also called "New Member Class") focuses on learning the basic doctrines of the Scripture with the intent of brining new members into fellowship at Immanuel Lutheran Church. If you are interested in learning about being a member of Immanuel the best thing to do is email us requesting information about becoming a member.

More Catechesis

Catechesis is the life lived in the Church, so everything really is catechesis. Even the fellowship we share at potlucks or our Women Better Together (1st Friday of the month at 5:30pm) is catechesis where we learn to live with one another in the love of Christ.
