Fathers & Heretics: The Apostolic Fathers 

In this class, students will read together a specific writing of an early Church father that has formed the theological foundation of Christianity. This class will consider the context of the writing, the false teachings it addresses, and its theological significance. As the text is read, attention will be given to its theological argument and its relation to our contemporary setting. This class will focus on the Apostolic fathers with special attention to the following texts: The Didache (80 AD), 1 Clement (90 AD), The Letters of Ignatius of Antioch (100 AD), and The Martyrdom of Polycarp (160 AD). Reading these texts together, the class will consider them in light of their immediate context and discuss their implications for the church today.
